It is a vulture! You were the first comment with the correct answer so you win bragging rights. I thought he was creepy also which is why I had to take the picture.
I've seen them going after road kill many times around here, but the heads are a little different in our area--probably a little different variety. They are a good clean-up crew!
He is likely to wait for a meal. With great patience. Indeed, vultures are nor very likeable, but in school we had learned that they are called the "sanitary police in the fauna", as they eat the dead animals. This is an important task. We have no vultures in Germany. Christel
"Sanitary police in the fauna!" How funny! I love the name and will remember it. Once again, I hesitated to post something so common to me because I assumed it would be boring to others. Yet now I learn there are none in Germany.
Maybe he found something to eat while you were gone all day. It is a Black Vulture. You may see their cousins the Turkey Vultures around somewhere. We have them both here. Lea in Mississippi
Thank you for the suggestion and I have just posted a link to Wild Bird Wednesday at: https://paying-ready-attention-gallery.blogspot.com/2017/10/wild-bird-wednesday-273-satin-bowerbird.html
If anyone enjoys watching birds, this is a great site to visit.
Hi there and welcome to WBW! I think I would be rather unsettled by a vulture on my roof - maybe just a little too superstitious!! Hope you can keep posting to WBW as all are welcome.
Thank you for the welcome Stewart but to avoid confusion, it was NOT my house. My roof is not caving in and I do, occasionally, clear out the weeds. Also, my ferocious guard dog, Scooter, would never allow a vulture on my roof. He would at least bark once before he ran and hid under the bed. Oh dear, what if everyone who saw the picture thought that was my house!!!
I will once again return and visit "Wild Bird Wednesday" because the pictures are so awesome.
What kind of a bird is that? Is it a vulture? Kind of creepy looking--that's for sure!

DeleteWhat an interesting bird! What is it? LOL If we have them here, they hide well. Maybe he's in the mood for romance.....
ReplyDeleteHe is a vulture and usually they are seen along empty highways waiting for well seasoned roadkill.
DeleteWith a face like that, he needs luck for romance.
