First Blooms of the Year!

I saw two croci blooming yesterday and they are my first blooms of the year.  It was exciting!  Last year my first bloom was not until  February 13th so this is three weeks earlier.  I don't know if this variety blooms earlier and I missed it last year, or if we are going to have an early spring.   Whatever is true, this is the reality of our weather.

It won't stop raining and I have forgotten how the sun looks.  At least now I have hope spring will come.

  1. Oooo, that is exciting! Thanks for sharing! We have no hope for blooms in the foreseeable future here because of loads of snow and cold...so I appreciate you sharing your signs of hope! :)

    1. Oh Beth, I don't know how you bear the long winters. I am already catching cabin fever.

  2. Oh how beautiful! I have daffodils coming up here in Chattanooga, but no blooms yet. And now this bitter cold weather! I am ready for it to warm up at least 10 degrees!

    1. I managed to find a few daffodil leaves above ground but that is it. At least the sun shone for a few hours today but the wind was bitter cold. Ten degrees won't help us - give me twenty at least!

  3. All that rain! I would almost think you lived here in Oregon if I didn't know better. We are pretty soggy here as well. Yesterday, one lady at the YMCA was lamenting all the rain we are having, and another one said, "Well, it is winter, isn't it?" Sometimes it's hard to remember that what keeps Oregon green is all the rain, and I'll bet it holds true for Tennessee, as well, although I've never been there. It's been windy and stormy the past couple of days, but is supposed to cheer up a bit toward the end of the week.

I love your little crocus blooms! I have a few here, by a tree, but they aren't blooming yet. I'm also pretty sure Patsy, my daughter, planted a very few more this fall. I'll have to ask her about them:). I did see some super early daffodils blooming by the library. This is SO early. I did notice those same ones last year, as well, so they must be a ultra-early variety, but this is early even for them.

I've only had one day in the past 2 weeks where I could get outside and trim bushes for a little while. I have so much more to do. I have a place where I want to put in 2 new raised beds and re-locate my herbs to one of them, and do strawberries in another. I want the herbs handy to the house, and the strawberries to have a happier time of it than where they have been before. So, lots to look forward to as spring comes nearer!

    Have a great week, Jeannie.

    1. Early daffodils! I should plant some of the ultra-ultra-ultra early kind since I eagerly look for them every spring. Their blooms cheer me so much. You are already planning your garden and I haven't even had time to read the new seed catalogs that have arrived. February is the hardest month for me to live through. It seems to be the longest even though it is the shortest month.

  4. A valiant crocus, what a lovely sign of hope! I found snowdrops showing their buds in the yard,
but not opened yet as it is too cold. We have minus 3 degrees Celsius (about 27 F)
during the night. We long for spring, but we must, however, wait some time. February is often a
very cold month but when the sun is shining it can be very nice.
    Look for more flowers !

    1. I will keep looking for any bloom I can find except it is hard to walk in the mud. I sink deeply but at least I now have a good pair of waterproof boots to wear. If only we could get one of these rainstorms during the dry month of August. Just one storm would make all the difference in the summer.

  5. Love those blooms!
I saw 3 daffodils trying to open buds yesterday, but it is so cold and windy here (north MS) that it takes a lot of courage.
But yes, Spring is on its way!

    1. The sun is finally shining today but the nights will be dropping down to the single digits next week. I don't know which is worse, sunshine and bitter cold or warm with torrential rain. I suppose I can't be pleased.
