Never Say, "The Worst is Over"

In my previous post, I said,  "The Worst is Over."   I will never say that again. (Never say never.)  On Christmas morning, AT&T and the 911 emergency hub in downtown Nashville, Tennesse were blown up.

December 25, 2020. Second Avenue North, Nashville, Tennessee

I am located 50 miles south of Nashville and my internet service is through AT&T.  We lost both internet and phone service. It appears, our phone carrier is leasing their cell tower space from AT&T so it has been unreliable. We don't have television because it is, in my humble opinion, boring, vulgar, and a waste of my time.  Within seconds, we were hurled back to the stone age.

The cell tower closest to my house.

Our internet is provided by Bill's company so he requested they handle the problem, but of course, the technician was on vacation.  No problem, we would enjoy the peace and quiet.  My men headed to the library and loaded up on action-packed guy movies full of fight scenes and explosions.  They were happy.

My guilty pleasure is library books full of pictures of gardens enjoyed with a cup of hot tea while watching snow fall outside.  I was happy.

Scooter's favorite pastime is sniffing a skunk's track and then coming into the house with a stinky face.  He is happy - we are not.

Shoo wee!

We are all introverts who are content to spend time relaxed at home.

The calm was shattered on New Year's Eve when I received a message from Mom's assisted living facility via my sister.  We tried to return the call but the phone didn't work.  My sister called Joshua and he was able to text us. Joshua and I could text back and forth, he could text others, but no one could text me.  Without the internet, we couldn't even send emails. The important message that had to be handled, was that earlier that day Nana had tested positive for the coronavirus and was feeling bad.

Sometimes life spills out of control.

It became necessary for us to reach the outside world and so the "where is a signal dance" began.  We drove around town searching for businesses with free wifi whose signals could be reached from the parking lot because everyone was closed for New Years'.  We hunted down the local cell towers and parked under them to use their signals. We finally discovered we could check out a hot spot from our local library and tether the phone to it.  I now know: exactly how long my computer and phone batteries will last plus where all the strongest wifi and dead spots are around my house. The last few weeks have not been easy.

As of today, there is much good news. Our internet is repaired and our new speed has increased from 1 to 30 megabits per second!  More than one person at a time can watch Youtube videos. We are in the space age! This morning Nana tested negative and has beaten the coronavirus. She is tired and weak but will be fine.  Lastly, my favorite good news - we stopped by GoodWill and donated Bill's crutches, walker, and potty chair.  He is still improving.

Standing tall and proud.

I really want to say life is good and 2021 will be better than 2020...but I know better than to say anything. Now that 2020 is in hindsight, hindsight is 20/20.

  1. Goodness, I'm glad you've come out the other side of that adventure, and things are on the upswing for you. May they continue to only get better.

    1. I would say it couldn't have been worse, but I dare not open my mouth for fear it would get worse.

    1. It seems 99% of the people do beat it and for that good news we should all be dancing in the streets!

  3. I'm so glad your mom is ok now.
That explosion looks awful. I mean, of course, we heard about it on the news, even out here in Oregon, but to see a picture is horrifying. I'm glad they got your services restored now, and I know you will enjoy your faster speeds!
Bill looks great! I'm glad you can donate your stuff. We didn't have most of those items--but had others that did the job. Rob still uses his trekker poles at times when he feels unsteady. One of his legs is still much shorter than the other, which throws him off at times. It was a lot shorter before the surgery, but there's only so much they can do. Now, he's trying to get through the hoops to get an insert. He's also facing Carpal Tunnel surgery in next week--another thing that has needed to be addressed. It's so bad, they scheduled it quickly once he got through all the hoops and into the correct specialist. It will be nice to get that one taken care of, as well.

You guys got snow! Beautiful. We've been running unseasonably warm this winter, and have only even had frost a few times. Right now, it's torrential rain. Seems like Oregon will stay green:)

    1. Bill's leg he had the surgery on is now longer than his healthy leg so he too is off balance. His doctor said it might adjust over time if not, he will get an insert also...unless he has to have the other hip replaced also. We aren't even going to think about that now. It is fine.

The snow was a surprise. It wasn't predicted but slipped in under the radar. It is a good snow. One that is beautiful, but melts on the roads as it falls.

I love the faster internet. Taking turns online was getting old. Bill had priority if it was for work. Dustin got priority if it was his schoolwork. I got the seconds between.

  4. What a time you have had...I don't know how Roger would make it without youtube and TV. we don't even have a dvd player hooked up. But I think he could watch one on his computer. We really have become internet addicted. We pay for cable...I like the local news, and a few shows. Always watch Jeopardy and Wheel...and quilting arts...and some things on PBS...but sometimes I think I need my head examined for paying for it. I wish all people would agree to cancel it until we could pay for the channels of our choosing.

    1. It is the commercials and foul language that drive me crazy. I have ad blockers installed on my computer which solves the commercial problem. My menfolk do not speak crudely around me so why would the television be allowed to do what we don't do? Nope. It sits in the basement unplugged.

I could be tempted to watch the quilting shows though...NOPE! Stop tempting me Rose!

  5. Oh Dear!
When it rains, it certainly pours! So thankful you are all safe and well now. Praying for peace to continue, with all staying healthy and well and NO disasters of any kind would be wonderful!

    1. Keep praying for peace! It will eventually come when God is finished "shaking all that can be shaken." It feels like we are a snowball rolling down hill, gaining speed as we go. 2021 will be wilder than 2020.

  6. My goodness! I always think people...especially young people that say, well it' can't get any worse than that....haven't lived life long enough. Sadly it can always get worse. You've sure had your share of troubles. But I'm so glad Bill is getting around and getting stronger every day. What a blessing! Today is laundry day...want to come over and help? We can fuss at the slow washer together! hahaha! Hugs!

    1. I would love to come by and do laundry with you! It wouldn't matter if it was slow, it beats going down to the creek and using a washboard. We were discussing our luxuries at the breakfast table this morning: turn a knob and hot water appears, put a cup in a box and your coffee is hot in seconds, crawl in bed and it is already warm, talk to someone on the other side of the world...I have so much.

  7. You have gone through bad times.Try to scare away these sad memories and thoughts. Things have developed
very satisfactorily in the meanwhile for you and your family. Bill is on a very good way, your mother has
beaten coronavirus and you even have a faster internet now. As you are a passionate gardener, is was a good idea to read all these books that you mentioned. It is still cold and there is even snow in your region, but faster than expected springtime will come and you will be well prepared.
Let us hope this new year will be peaceful in your country and in all others.

    1. Right now, life is calm - I hope it isn't the calm before the storm! It will be a while before we have peace in our country.

    1. We kept walking around asking each other, "Do you smell that?" It was only an occasional whiff but when you hugged him, he stunk!
