First Blooms of the Year!

Only because it is a family tradition, today I went in search of a cheerful blooming crocus to show to my Mom.  It was not a success.  As soon as any buds appear, a storm blows in and shreds it to pieces.  This is the best-looking bunch and it isn't impressive.

If it wasn't for the pansies Reese gave me last year, my yard would look dismal...just like the middle of February! (Have I mentioned before how much I hate the month of February? Especially when it has an extra day.)

My daffodils are waiting for a bit of dry weather and sunshine before they come to life - the same can be said about me.

There are 48,960 minutes before spring and I am counting each one.

  1. Usually the first bloom I see is a dandelion...I have not thought to look. I would prefer pansies to about anything. They are one of my favorite flowers. Any sign of life looks good in the spring.

  2. I'm with you regarding February, but your February is much more floriferous than mine. ;-) Gosh, those pansies are pretty!

    1. "Floriferous" - a new word to me. I had to look it up and then play it for all to hear. Nothing like homeschooling again. Everyone is required to use it now.
"Mom likes the floriferous time of year the best."
"Floriferous" rhymes with "coniferous" and "deciduous".

My son Dustin decided to write a poem:

Mom's garden is beside the woods coniferous,
although some of it is deciduous.
She temps us with delicacies floriferous,
but alas, Dad and I are carnivorous.

  3. I like Dustin's poem. Hang in there, spring will be here before we know it.

  4. I have not seen any flowers here yet, but I would not mind. I am tired of the gray days and ready for a more warm and sunny day. I am thankful that I have seen a couple of cardinals as I always remind myself that spring is usually near.

  6. Waiting for spring? Everybody seems to be impatient. But the hot days will come soon.
And then we will groan due to the heat. So I better enjoy for another while these cooler
    temperatures and also the rain.

    1. Yesterday the sun shone brightly and I went wild working in the vegetable garden. I made many plans for today and then about 3:00 am another storm blew in. Darn it! I suppose it is for the best since I am sore from working so hard. Funny how you don't feel the pain or exhaustion when you are doing something you love.

  7. I love the flowers in your yard! I am hanging on to the cooler weather (such as we get) here in Florida as long as I can, because the heat gets brutal quickly here, and hangs around for a long, long time. We used air conditioning this last Thanksgiving.
I happen to like February, especially that extra day every four years: that extra day is my birthday!

    1. It was my late Grandfather's birthday also! The other three years he got to choose if he wanted to celebrate it on February 28th or March 1st. I would have chosen to celebrate on both days (more cake).
      Happy Birthday JD.
