Local Ladies' Garden Club, January's Meeting

The Local Ladies' Garden Club, of which I am a member, met this week for the first time since last year.  Oh, how I have missed these wonderful ladies over the winter.  We discussed important club matters such as: Will we have Valentine party?  Of course.  Who will bring what food?  Everyone volunteered their best dishes. Other items of lesser importance were also discussed but the food was really all that matters.

A few of the ladies brought arrangements which were surprising since finding anything outside to use this time of year is definitely slim pickings.  One of the club's longest-serving members showed the younger members what an experienced designer can do.  Yes, she used her evening's soup ingredients to make her arrangement.

I have so much to learn.

  1. These are beautiful! The one with the carrots is adorable and would be so cute for an Easter centerpiece!

I read your empty nest post and SO agree. My youngest headed to your area last fall. Kills me every time he leaves. He goes to MTSU. He absolutely loves TN!

    I SO enjoy your blog.

    1. Thank you Renee. The vegetable arrangement was a hit. Everyone had to circle around it and find out how she managed to make it; it was an engineering masterpiece.

My youngest, Reese, graduated from MTSU and he is the one who is taking the four month internship in east Tennessee. Tell your son to watch out for the campus security cops, they live to give parking tickets.

I love Tennessee also, dearly love it.

  2. It is not easy to make flower arrangements at this time of the year. But the ladies of your club did it. And with great fantasy.
By the way, was there any water in the vase with the carrots or were the flowers kept moist somehow "within" the bundle of carrots?
Here in the south-west corner of Germany it is no longer so very cold. So there is hope for pretty snow drops after a couple of weeks.

    1. There was no water in the jar for the carrots. They were standing up straight and being supported at the top with chicken wire (which is like a net made from thin wire). On top of the wire was a small bowl, inside the bowl was oasis (which is a type of styrofoam which soaks up water). The oasis was wet and it kept the flowers alive. The radishes and brussel sprouts had floral picks (little wooden sticks) in them and they were poked into the oasis. She spent quite a bit of time working on it, getting it just right. I am glad I got a picture since it is probably eaten by now.

  3. Thank you, Jeannie, for this detailed description. Yes, probably parts of this arrangement are eaten by now.
May I ask you,if emails I sent to you with pictures attached reached your email-letterbox? I am not very clever with computers, that is why I ask.
You said, you dearly love Tennessee. What a great compliment to your
    home country !

    1. Christel, they have not arrived in my email box nor are they in my spam folder. I have had difficulty receiving my gmail since the beginning of this blog. That is the reason I have published the address right on the front page where it says "about me". Just to make sure it appears on your page, I will repeat jmorrrris9@gmail.com. Do resend.

    1. How they found anything to use was beyond my imagination. I never thought of going to Kroger's produce department to get supplies for an arrangement.

    1. Margaret, you can join mine! We are having a membership drive and everyone is to invite one person. You can be my guest. You will win the award for the longest trip to the meeting (of course we don't have an award right now but if you come I will see that we do and that you win). It will be so much fun, of course your drive home will be horrible, but we can think about that tomorrow.
Oh, did I forget to mention the great food?

  7. You're the best, Jeannie! Unfortunately that unpleasant thing called working for a living has reared its ugly head and I shall have to decline your kind invitation. Le sigh. But I shall appreciate all the gardening posts that you post on this site! (Btw, you made me laugh out loud as usual. Love your sense of humour!)

    1. "Sense of humour", did you think I was joking? I most certainly was not! The club is having a membership drive and I don't have any friends to invite. I am desperate! People would like me if I was nicer, but to that, I would have to be nicer.

The invitation stands, at least until I learn manners.

  9. I left a comment a few days ago letting you know how much I enjoyed these arrangements. I guess I must have pushed the wrong button or something. But, I still like them, especially the one with the vegetables.

It sounds like you have some talented members in your club.
