A Birth Announcement

A few weeks ago I shared about the irritating expectant mother who has caused so many problems.  Early one morning this past week I peeped into the nest which she inconsiderately built in my garden shed and noticed a bleary eye surrounded by fuzzy down looking back at me.  No one moved and I quietly slipped away.

A few days later I checked again, this time two angry beady eyes glared back at me.  He/She did not like me or the camera and slid down deeper into the nest.  He would not come out to pose for my photo-op and avoided me every time I returned.  He is going to be irritating just like his mother.

As I continued to try to get pictures, they would quickly disappear into the nest.  I knew it was just a matter of time before the home would be outgrown because Mom was feeding them every worm she could find.

Tonight it happened, I caught all four of them getting some fresh air before the sun went down.  The one second from the left who is still glaring at the camera and is spread out taking up most of the room, he is going to be a problem.

  1. Oh my gosh.....baby anything is cute, except snakes and alligators. Keep an eye on them and as soon as they leave the nest shut the shed door before Momma decides to lay more eggs! We had a pair in the lattice room and as soon as they kicked a batch out of the nest they were putting more eggs in it....house wrens...they have lots of babies in one season.

    1. No Sally, No! That is not what I need to hear! Even if I close the door there is a big mouse hole in the bottom and she could still get in. I can knock the nest down and clean up the mess, it will be nasty, but she might build it again. I have taken all of my flower arrangements and potted plants off of the front porch so she won't return there. She is very irritating.

Maybe if I keep taking pictures, that might run them off!

  2. We had to tie up some plastic take out containers to serve as blockades when a particularly persistent robin was convinced the porch lights were the perfect place to start her little family. A friend allowed it to happen at their house and they were attacked every time they used the door.

  3. Oh, Rebecca, I hadn't thought about being attacked; so far she has always flown away but other birds are more aggressive. You gave me an idea that I could stuff plastic grocery bags into the mousehole to keep her out of the shed. Of course, repairing the door would be the better option, but it would also require much more work. A plastic bag will work just fine, I think. Thanks.

    1. They are cute now but they will grow up and build more nests everywhere. They are driving me crazy.

  5. In your rural surrounding bird parents will surely find a new place
for building another nest for the next siblings. They are creative.

    1. This afternoon I saw another one looking inside the shoes sitting on the porch by the front door. One time one built a nest down inside Dustin's boot. He was not happy when he found it and we all could not stop laughing. Dustin did not laugh.
