Rocks, For Sale

My neighborhood, not the moon.
Everyone seemed to think I was exaggerating about all the rocks when I shared my exciting post Rocks in Tennessee.  I was not.  To prove I was telling the truth, I visited one of the many local rock quarries close by my home and took pictures.

What does anyone do when they have too much of anything?  A garage sale is always a good solution.  Sell the stuff!

As I said, we really have mountains of rocks in this part of Tennessee.

  1. These bare rocks are impressive. But fortunately,as I can see on your other photos, there are also extensive green pastures and large
    forests in your beautiful state.

    1. You are right! We are sitting on top of solid bedrock limestone. When you bulldoze the dirt aside, this is what you find. Some places have deep dirt, but our area does not.

  2. Hi Jeannie, Quite impressive! My first thought was that I hoped it was white quartz...I have a thing for it....Do you know what kind of rocks they are? It looks like they make a lot of gravel and pea stone. Tennessee looks beautiful and diverse. What zone are you in?

    1. No, not quartz but limestone. LIMESTONE EVERYWHERE! It is crushed and used for gravel then used for driveways, roads, buildings, everything. They do not sell it at garage sale prices but charge a high price for it.

I am in planting zone 6b, southern middle Tennessee, close to the Alabama State line. There is not much dirt in this area. We are sitting on top of solid bedrock which is why it forms ponds when they stop pumping the water out of the quarry. Sometimes when it is quiet and I am sitting out in the backyard, I can faintly hear them blasting in the distance.

    3. I am right on the border between zone 7a and 6b. Different maps put me in different areas. I think I am closer to 7a but when I typed in my zipcode, it was 6b.

  3. Interesting. Each state (and each region of the world, really) seems to have its own unique surprise characteristics. It's so fun to learn about these things, so thanks for sharing this. Your puppy in your next post is a cutie!
